The Burmese emerged as a nation under a dynamic ruler called Anawratta during the mid 11th Century AD. The following 200 years saw recurring wars with the Mon (Tai) peoples together with raids into what is now Southern China. These raids provoked a series of attacks by the Yuan mongols which eventually overthrew the ruling dynasty and captured the capital Pagan. The Burmese armies fielded a large proportion of cavalry and they also put great faith(sometimes mis-guided) in their war elephants. The infantry was composed of a general tribal levy armed with spear, bow or crossbow. These were backed on occasion by a more professional palace guard.
