Packed of 8 foot/4 cavalry unless otherwise stated Around 550AD the Avars were driven westward by the emergent 'Celestial' or 'Blue' Turkish empire which established a new ruling dynasty over much of Central East Asia. Around 583AD however, this Empire split into an Eastern and Western half which were mutually hostile. The Eastern Turks (later called Uighurs) had also to tend with the rising power of Tang China and they adapted their style of warfare to their new enemies, putting greater reliance on more heavily armoured cavalry. The Western Turks (Oghuz) tended to retain their traditional style of warfare, with the emphasis on light horse archers backed by heavy cavalry. The Turks were fearsome warriors and superb metalsmiths, their armour was prized and influenced both Persian and Chinese manufacturers.
