The Avars, otherwise known as the Juan Juan, were a Turkish speaking people who arrived in the West in the late 6th Century AD under the great Khan Baian. They carved out an empire in Central Southern Europe having fought Franks, Bulgars, Slavs abd Gepids as well as allying with the Sassanids against the Byzantines. In early Avar history, they are said to have displaced the Huns from their homelands in Mongolia and caused them to migrate westwards. They themselves went on to settle in North West China, only to be driven out ad forced west by the successful revolt of their Turkish vassals. The Avars disappear from world history after their final defeat at the hands of Charlemagne in 796AD.
