The Franks occupied parts of North West Germany originally, but migrated South to carve out a new homeland in Northern France and Belgium as well as parts of West Germany towards the end of the Roman Empire in the West. In 507AD Clovis, king of the Franks defeated the Visigoths under Alaric II at the battle of Vouille, thus giving shape to the modern state of France. Although they did make some use of cavalry, the early Franks were noted for their fierce infantry who weilded their throwing axes (Francisca) and heavy javelins (Angon) with deadly effect. Their tactics were not terribly sophisticated, usually consisting of a series of wild charges in a dense mass or standing their ground on the defensive in huddled clumps. Their doggedness however brought them much success (as well as the occasional disaster!)
