The Romano British had to look to their own defence and valiantly resisted under leaders like Ambrosius and the semi-legendary Arthur. Their armies were usually composed of a levy of infantry mlitia supported by a local leaders mounted retinue. The Romano British offered stern resistance to the invaders for over 2 centuries. Indeed, the Strathclyde Britons maintained an independant state until the 10th Century and the Welsh until the 13th Century.
